How the math works

Peso change = last rate ÷ new rate − 1. When the peso gets stronger, fewer pesos buy a dollar and your prices feel cheaper to shoppers from Mexico.

Change in Mexican shopper sales = elasticity × peso change, once with the low elasticity and once with the high one. Change in dollars per month = sales from Mexican shoppers × that change. Change in store sales = Mexican shopper share × that change.

The elasticity says how strongly your shoppers react. It is your own assumption, so start with 0.5 to 1.5 and adjust it with your own sales history. Holidays, bridge lines and paydays move sales too.

The example is a store with $100,000 in monthly sales, 40% from Mexican shoppers, when the rate moves from 18.50 to 17.50 pesos per dollar.
