Cost per mile calculator

Free tool · Freight

Your cost per mile is what one mile costs you after every bill, fuel and pay. Charge more than this on every mile you drive, loaded or empty, and the truck makes money.

Truck and trailer payments, insurance, plates, parking and every bill that stays the same when the truck sits. Example: 4,525.
All the miles the truck runs in a normal month, loaded and empty.
Example: 3.90. Check the EIA weekly Gulf Coast average or use what your fuel card shows.
Miles divided by gallons over the last month. Your ELD or fuel card report has both.
Last year’s shop bills divided by last year’s miles.
What you pay the driver per mile. If you drive, put your own pay here.

How the math works

Cost per mile = fixed costs per month ÷ miles per month + diesel price ÷ MPG + maintenance per mile + driver pay per mile.

Fixed costs are the bills that stay the same when the truck sits: payments, insurance, plates and parking. The more miles you run, the less of them each mile carries. Fuel, maintenance and driver pay grow with every mile.

Break even per month = cost per mile × miles per month. The example truck has $4,525 in fixed costs a month, runs 10,000 miles, gets 6.5 MPG on $3.90 diesel and pays the driver $0.65 a mile.
